TAMRA HUESERS

Tamra Huesers wishes that peer support had been available to her when she went through years of mental health struggles.  Navigating those difficulties blindly from the time she was a pre-teen with severe anxiety, depression, and other related concerns, for years she did not even possess the language for talking about her experience, and had been raised only to see her struggles as signs of moral weakness or personal defect.  She came to, through many years of effort and help from others, finally understand mental health issues as part of the spectrum of human experience, which could be addressed by acknowledging and embracing her experiences and building a life centered on acceptance and purpose.  She understands the role that peer support can play in easing the path through mental health concerns, and is working diligently to make sure that no one has to take that journey alone.

Tamra began her peer support work in 2015 at the Harmony Center in Minot, ND, where she started at just sixteen hours a week as the center’s Recovery Coordinator, providing peer support and assisting with center activities.  During her time there, she has become a ND Certified Peer Support Specialist II, assumed a full-time position at the center, and, as of October of 2023, is the Executive Director of Peer Vision for Mental Health, the peer-run nonprofit that now manages the Harmony Center.

Tamra holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Jamestown College and a master’s degree in Mental Health Recovery and Social Inclusion from the University of Hertfordshire.  She is also a PSAND Founder and board member, an Intentional Peer Support Trainer, President of Minot Area Peer Support Specialists (MAPSS), and a peer support consultant to Minot Vets for Vets, a project of Peer Vision that is expanding peer services for former service members in the Minot area.

Dustin Eddy is a Certified Peer Support Specialist with the West Central Human Service Center in Bismarck, ND.  Dustin joined the PSAND Board of Directors in 2024 bringing with him two years of experience as a Certified Peer Support Specialist.

Dustin shares his lifetime of lived experience through recovery from childhood to adult traumas, substance use disorders to struggles with mental health.  Dustin believes he was fortunate to have been raised in a supportive environment with correction following him every step off the straight and narrow path.  From a juvenile delinquent in Montana to an adult felon in North Dakota, Dustin has had his fair share of disciplines over the years, teaching him something with every correction.

Now, Dustin stays out of trouble with help from his two dogs (Sarge and Bandit) who require constant attention and eliminate any idle time.  Dustin also stays involved with 6 of the 7 children and 5 of the 6 grandchildren that he shares with his current wife, Wendy.  Together they enjoy traveling, camping, attending concerts and festival events.

BONNIE RIELY

Bonnie Riely started her journey of recovery at the tender age of 13 when she entered her first treatment center.  Just hours after being released from her 2nd treatment at 17 years old she was involved in a near fatal accident while looking for some marijuana.  She had major brain surgery, which would follow a year of speech therapy and memorization.  Two more stints in treatment followed.  During this journey she would also marry a boy she met in treatment and raise 2 daughters and hold down a full-time job.  Her addiction caused a lot of strain and tension on her family and job, and almost cost her that marriage.  It was thanks to a DUI and the Grace of God that she entered her last treatment.  Today she is a very grateful recovering alcoholic twenty-nine years clean and still married to that boy!

Believing that God has a purpose for her, she has used her twenty-nine years of lived experience to help others in her personal life as well as her professional life.  Bonnie says, “Helping others also helps me and I truly believe God puts people in my path for this purpose!  I think I’m pretty good at it!”  Bonnie does not take one day of recovery for granted.

Bonnie has been employed at the First District Health Unit for 15 years.  As a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist, she facilitates cessation classes and coordinates a program for pregnant women who want to quit using nicotine.  She is also a Certified Peer Support Specialist in FDHU’s Harm Reduction Program.
